When your car is “totaled” by the insurance company, you might not know what to expect. Traditionally, your insurance company will try to settle the situation quickly by encouraging you to accept their initial offer of “Actual Cash Value” for your damaged vehicle. They are hoping that you’ll let them settle this quickly and are banking on the fact that you’ll accept their initial seemingly “fair” offer.

If you are unsatisfied with their offer, you may want initiate the “appraisal clause” within your policy and combat the insurance company’s often low or inaccurate estimate of Actual Cash Value.

Once the Appraisal Clause has been initiated, you’ll be asked to hire an appraiser to form an opinion of Actual Cash Value for your tragically totaled vehicle. Your insurance company will also hire an alleged independent appraiser, from their Rolodex of appraisers, to form an opinion of Actual Cash Value of your automobile and negotiate on their behalf.
